EARLY YEARS

Through our early years foundation curriculum, we aim to improve and extend the child's:
.language acquisition,
.mathematical development,
.knowledge and understanding of the world,
.physical and creative skills,
.personal and social skills.
These areas of learning will provide a foundation for later learning. As children progress, their work will be planned using the Keystage 1 programmes of study of the National Curriculum.

The following National Curriculum subjects are taught to all pupils. Children usually work to topics or themes, which may cover several subject areas, but some subjects are taught separately:
English (Literacy)
Mathematics(Numeracy)
Science
ICT
Design Technology
PSHE
History
Geography
Music
Art
Physical education

In addition, we also provide Religious education and a daily act of worship.

Children are seen as individuals, and the curriculum is organised to meet the needs of all, including those with special educational needs. Content of the curriculum is as practical as possible, and seeks to make tasks relevant to the daily life of the child. A happy and caring environment is also sought, so that children may work and grow in confidence, whilst undertaking a wide range of enjoyable activities.
ENGLISH (LITERACY)

We aim to give children the skills and confidence to communicate their thoughts, feelings and ideas in a clear, interesting and positive way and give them the opportunity to practise the skill of listening attentively in a variety of situations.

Reading is the key to many doors and great emphasis is placed on reading for enjoyment, for interest and information. we aim to give children the skills to read fluently, competently and with expression. A joy and appreciation of the written word is also nurtured. We have graded reading book materials, which are used in conjunction with other fiction books and a well-stocked library of non-fiction books. we believe in using a variety of approaches in the teaching of reading.

From an early age, children are encouraged to put their thoughts into words and have the opportunity to express themselves by writing carefuly and accurately. Spelling and grammar are taught, and children are encouraged to present their work with care and with pride. handwriting is taught throughout the school.
MATHEMATICS (NUMERACY)

All children are encouraged to think clearly and logically and to develop an enjoyment of this subject. A wide range of mathematical material is used within the school. Computer programmes are also used to help provide a feel for number. The children are given the opportunity to extend their skills through whole class direct teaching, guided group teaching, differentiated group tasks and individual assistance. We use a wide range of practical equipment and ensure that pupils gain practical experience before tackling more formal written tasks. we aim to enable children to apply and manipulate all aspects of mathematics in order to solve problems in practical situations.
SCIENCE

This is a practical subject and is taught in a way which emphasises practical, investigative and problem-solving skills. the children are encouraged to observe, measure, predict, experiment and explain. By working in a systematic way, we aim to help children draw conclusions from information which has been gathered. The activities which the children experience are based on a programme which includes the study of:
. life processes and living things,
. materials and their properties,
. physical processes.
ICT

Within Information Communication Technology, we encourage children to become aware of the uses of technology in modern day society. We help them to acquire the skills needed to handle and interpret data and then communicate this to others. We also examine the way in which technology can be used to control a variety of situations.

The children have access to a wide range of equipment including:
. a wide range of software,
. the Internet,
. Interactive Whiteboards,
digital cameras,
. scanners,
. control equipment,
. cassette recorders,
. televisions and video recorders.
