Igniting Writing 2002 - The Whales' Song
Following last year's highly successful Igniting Writing Initiative, we decided to embark upon Igniting Writing 2002.
The aims of the initiative were the same as in 2001; to encourage creativity, high quality writing and groupwork and collaboration skills. Speaking and listening skills were to be developed, as well as encouraging the children to have a sense of pride in their achievements.
This year, our work was based around 'The Whales' Song' by Dyan Sheldon and Gary Blythe.
We decided upon a whole school approach once again, with children working in mixed-age groups for the first session of every day. Children in the Foundation Stage and Year 1 were involved in separate activities. In the initial session, activities were oral or drama based, with an emphasis on groups sharing their ideas. The sessions then continued back in our classrooms, with children working on different, age-appropriate activities.
