Foundation subjects
HISTORYWe aim to develop the child's awareness of the past and the ability to make comparisons with the present. The children are given the opportunity to study ancient civilisations, as well as important events in the history of Britain. We make full use of the school building, local community and a range of artefacts as historical resources.
GEOGRAPHYWe aim to develop geographical skills by investigating local areas, maps, climates, settlements and features; extending these investigations to national and worldwide regions. Children are also encouraged to appreciate the impact humans have upon geography and discuss ways in which improvements can be made.
Children are encouraged to develop an awareness of their environment through project and topic work. They are given opportunities to visit places of interest. These experiences are followed up in school in a variety of ways.
Older children have the opportunity to make a residential visit, within years 5 or 6. In the past, children have visited Everdon Field Centre, Houlgate Village in York and Kingswood, Norfolk.
(For more information on this, please see our visitors and visits page).
ARTWe aim to give children the skills and opportunities to be able to express themselves in a variety of forms and media. We encourage the development of aesthetic awareness and appreciation, and the natural urge to be creative. Children are taught to use a variety of techniques, including using computer software.
The school has a separate pottery room and its own kiln.
DESIGN TECHNOLOGYWe aim for children to be able to plan and produce models, artefacts and systems, using a wide range of tools and materials. To develop individual creativity, the children work in a variety of forms and have the opportunity to look at design and its impact on everyday life.
MUSICWe provide the children with rich, stimulating musical experiences to encourage their appreciation of the subject.
We have a varied curriculum to include singing, percussion composition and listening activities. The children also have the opportunity to learn how to read music, understand pitch, rhythm, dynamics and composition.
There is an opportunity for all children to learn to play the recorder. In addition, peripatetic teachers offer violin and brass instrument lessons to pupils who have demonstrated the necessary potential.
In addition, the children take part in many festivals, carol services and concerts.
